About Me
Sofía Retamal is a freelance filmmaker, photographer, and content creator based in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born and raised in Maryland, her passion for visual storytelling began with film photography and a love for the outdoors. Over time, she expanded into digital media, blending both formats to create compelling narratives that connect people, places, and ideas.
With Chilean, Italian, and Croatian roots, Sofía’s multicultural background has shaped her perspective and deepened her appreciation for diverse stories. Fluent in Spanish and English, she values communication as a bridge between cultures, an interest sparked by her own experience learning English as a child. Through visual media, she explores ways to transcend language barriers and share meaningful stories.
Her work spans environmental storytelling, outdoor adventure media, and personal narratives. She is currently producing a short documentary for the Coral Lab at the Center for Marine Science at UNC Wilmington and collaborates with Sea Earth Sail, creating visual content for USVI-based captain and sailing instructor, Phoebe. She is also developing Life Afloat, a personal documentary series featuring interviews with liveaboard sailors around the world.
When she’s not behind the camera, Sofía can be found rock climbing, sailing, surfing, running, or backpacking—always in search of the next adventure and the stories that come with it.
